    My Staying in Essentials

It’s no secret around here that I love a nice, cozy evening. I would rather have a night in, then a night out any day of the week. I much prefer the comfort of home and sweatpants to loud parties and heels. If I’m being completely honest, the only pair of heels that I own are the ones I wore on my wedding day! I digress. There is something so comforting about home; the place where I feel most “me.” That’s why when Leesa reached out to me and asked if I would share my staying in essentials, I jumped at the opportunity. In a nutshell, my brand = staying in and enjoying my home, so this topic is my perfect match.

    My staying in essentials

I’m about to reveal my truest of colors because the first item on my list of staying in essentials is of course, a comfy pair of sweatpants. If I’m at home, you can bet I’m in my comfies rather than a pair of jeans. My favorite sweatpants are this pair from the men’s department at H&M. A night in wouldn’t be complete with out every seasonal candle in my home being lit after dusk. I usually shop for candles at places like Bath & Body Works, Anthro, or Target as they always have the most affordable options and best scents. There is something so cozy about having the ambient light of a seasonal candle flickering during the night so this is always a must for my night’s in.

Most nights I queue up my favorite YouTube channels for a little bit of binge-watching while I wind down from the day’s work. Right now I’m loving these channels that focus on interiors: Mr. Kate, Kate La Vie, and Kitty Cotten. My final essential for staying in is a good book. I read a book before falling asleep every night because it’s my way to disconnect from everything happening in the world and allow my mind to clear. You can see what I’ve been reading lately in this post here!

Now that the days are getting shorter I’m definitely going to indulge my home-body self with lots more night’s in. What are your staying in essentials? Do you have any favorite YouTube channels or books to read during this time of year? I’m always in search of new things to add to my lists!

      Monthly Favorites | October

Happy November! We are officially in the Holiday season. I’m sure you’re all just as excited as me, right? But before we completely welcome in the Holidays I have a quick October favorites for you. I’ve been on a Halloween movie marathon kick since the start of the week because I love all things festive and it just felt right. I was also a bit of a reading machine during October. So are you even surprised that I have included three books in my monthly favorites? I read 2 1/2 physical books and listened to 2 audio books most of which are worth mentioning. ;) So if you fancy a list of my favorite things and links to where you can find them, keep on reading.

October Monthly Favorites by Nicole Dianne | www.nicoledianne.com

Hollow City: The second book in the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series

This book is the second book in the Miss Peregrine’s series that I’ve now talked about in a total of three posts on this blog. :) What can I say? It’s really just that good of a trilogy. This book continues in the world of peculiars, diving further into their adventures and introducing new characters.

      BLOOM Book

Estee LaLonde is one of my favorite YouTubers so it’s no surprise that her book made it into my monthly favorites. She shared personal stories that were so relatable and made it very easy to read. The book itself is quite beautiful and stands alone as a lovely coffee table book.

      The Magnolia Story

I don’t think there’s a person in all of America who isn’t a fan of Chip and Jo. As someone who loves home interior styling, the show Fixer Upper is one of my favorites. When I found out that Chip and Jo narrated their own audio book, I was all in. Jeff and I ended up listening to this entire book last weekend on our drive to and from Carmel. Jeff was actually the one who encouraged me to put it on for the drive, so it’s safe to say it’s a couples-approved listen. :)

      Hocus Pocus Sweatshirt

I don’t make these sorts of purchases very often, but when a discount code showed up in my inbox, I couldn’t resist. I bought a festive, Halloween sweatshirt that glows in the dark and I’m anything but regretful over this purchase even though Jeff made fun of me. I love a cozy sweatshirt for this time of year, add something festive to it and it makes the favorites list!

      Thrifting

This would actually be a favorite every single month if it wasn’t repetitive to include. But during the month of October I was able to find some really great items for our home. Not only do I love the process of sifting through second-hand goods, finding that little diamond in the rough, but I love the character these finds add to our home. Check back later this month for a post on thrifting!

      Last month’s favorites here.

How to Decorate Your Mantel for Fall + a Video!

        how-to-decorate-your-mantel-for-fall

how to decorate your mantel for fall by Nicole Dianne | www.nicoledianne.com

Okay guys, I know I’m overdoing it on the mantel pictures, but since moving into Wally Cottage, decorating this little mantel has been my greatest joy and so I can’t help but share! I’m sure you aren’t too upset about it though, right? Plus today’s post comes complete with my first “how to” video at the end! Halloween is just around the corner but you still have time to add some festive pieces into your home so today I’m sharing my 4 Tips for Decorating your Fall Mantel.

START WITH YOUR GROUNDING, FOCAL PIECES.

These are the items that will essential “ground” your design. They set the structure for how everything will lay out. For our mantel, I settled on different sized and shaped pumpkins and a stacked pile of books as my grounding pieces.

BRING IN ITEMS THAT VARY IN HEIGHT

Adding in different heights is important because it keeps everything balanced. I added in a green plant (when too close to the candlesticks may or may not have caught on fire…beware :)), and an assortment of thrifted, brass candlesticks. I love that the plant brought both needed height and texture to the overall design. And bringing in thrifted candlesticks really added character.

        ACCESSORIZE

Accessories bring everything together. I added a marble tea light holder, a candle snuffer, and a festive skeleton for good measure. Too many trinkets and it’s clutter, too little trinkets and it’s bare… but have fun with it! Move things around and adjust your decor until it feels right. There is really no right or wrong answer.

        FINISH WITH TWINKLE LIGHTS

This is a personal favorite touch of mine. I have twinkle lights just about everywhere that Jeff will allow for it. We have them strung in our bedroom, on our porch and draped on our mantel. For our mantel, I used a battery operated, wire strand which added a very delicate feel to an otherwise crowded mantel. They add such a whimsical touch and make any room feel festive and happy!

        Onto the video ;)

I have been planning this video since the start of Fall but the stars didn’t align until early this week for me to film everything so it’s a little bit late to the game, but better late than never right? I had just about everything going against me and I made a ton of rookie mistakes that I won’t make in the future (like not marking where my tripod was, lighting my plant on fire, shattering my first set of twinkle lights….etc ;)) But it’s here and it’s done and I’m excited to share my first YouTube video, “How to Decorate Your Mantel for Fall.”

The best advice ever given to me

          sacramento-photographer-photo-fb

I remember walking into the break-room, anxious to talk with my manager. I knew what I wanted to do, but I also knew I was scared. I knew the risks, I felt the fear, and I could list every reason why I shouldn’t do it. But that conversation was when everything changed for me and I’ll never forget what my manager said to me that day.

You see, I worked for a little caffeination supply company called, Starbucks. For three years to be exact. It wasn’t high-paying and it wasn’t really job security but it was a side job to get me through college while I got my business off the ground. It was a security blanket, really. Here’s the thing about me; I love blankets. They’re warm, cozy, they add a layer of security from harsh elements, and they look nice when they’re folded up neatly in the corner of the room. But sometimes blankets can feel too heavy, they get in the way when you’re twisted up in them, and once you’re warm and toasty you start to feel like you might not really need the blanket anymore.

Starbucks was my blanket. It was cozy… it was easy. But it sure didn’t make me happy and I knew that being my own boss would make me happier. I was scared though. I wanted to hold onto my security blanket so I walked into the break-room and told my manager, “So here’s the deal, how about I stay on for like 2 days per week? You know, just in case things don’t work out with being my own boss.” At that moment, he looked me straight in the eyes and said something I’ll never forget, “You don’t need to work here anymore, you’re not happy here. You can do it, Nicole. You’ll be okay.”

“You can do it, you’ll be okay,” has resonated with me ever since. He gave me the nudge, and the extra shove that I needed to chase after my exceptionally unstable but worth fighting for dreams.

Sometimes I want to throw the towel in because being my own boss is HARD. Yes, I wear sweatpants to the “office,” and make my own schedule, but it’s so much more than that. I get down on myself and my failures quite often but I’m always brought back to that moment in the break-room where someone believed in me. He believed in me in a way I didn’t believe in myself and that’s something that meant the world to me.

I don’t know where you’re at, what you’re dreaming of, or when you’ll leap in… but I do know this… whatever happens? You can do it, you’ll be okay. Your dreams may be small or they may be big, but whatever they are you have to start now. If not now, when? Here is your nudge, your permission even. It’s not easy and you’ll feel every emotion along the way, but I want you to know that you’ll be okay.
